The Enshrouded One
سورة المزمل
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
73:1
The Enshrouded One
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ١
O you wrapped ˹in your clothes˺!
73:2
The Enshrouded One
قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا٢
Stand all night ˹in prayer˺ except a little—
73:3
The Enshrouded One
نِّصْفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا٣
˹pray˺ half the night, or a little less
73:4
The Enshrouded One
أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا٤
or a little more—and recite the Quran ˹properly˺ in a measured way.
73:5
The Enshrouded One
إِنَّا سَنُلْقِى عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا٥
˹For˺ We will soon send upon you a weighty revelation.
73:6
The Enshrouded One
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ هِىَ أَشَدُّ وَطْـًٔا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا٦
Indeed, worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation.
73:7
The Enshrouded One
إِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا٧
For during the day you are over-occupied ˹with worldly duties˺.
73:8
The Enshrouded One
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا٨
˹Always˺ remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly.
73:9
The Enshrouded One
رَّبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا٩
˹He is the˺ Lord of the east and the west. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, so take Him ˹alone˺ as a Trustee of Affairs.
73:10
The Enshrouded One
وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا١٠
Be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say, and depart from them courteously.
73:11
The Enshrouded One
وَذَرْنِى وَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُو۟لِى ٱلنَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا١١
And leave to Me the deniers—the people of luxury—and bear with them for a little while.
73:12
The Enshrouded One
إِنَّ لَدَيْنَآ أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا١٢
˹For˺ We certainly have shackles, a ˹raging˺ Fire
73:13
The Enshrouded One
وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا١٣
choking food, and a painful punishment ˹in store for them˺
73:14
The Enshrouded One
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا١٤
on the Day the earth and mountains will shake ˹violently˺, and mountains will be ˹reduced to˺ dunes of shifting sand.
73:15
The Enshrouded One
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَـٰهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا١٥
Indeed, We have sent to you a messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh.
73:16
The Enshrouded One
فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا١٦
But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a stern grip.
73:17
The Enshrouded One
فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَ شِيبًا١٧
If you ˹pagans˺ persist in disbelief, then how will you guard yourselves against ˹the horrors of˺ a Day which will turn children’s hair grey?
73:18
The Enshrouded One
ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرٌۢ بِهِۦ ۚ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَفْعُولًا١٨
It will ˹even˺ cause the sky to split apart. His promise ˹of judgment˺ must be fulfilled.
73:19
The Enshrouded One
إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا١٩
Surely this is a reminder. So let whoever wills take the ˹Right˺ Way to their Lord.
73:20
The Enshrouded One
۞ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَىِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةٌ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۚ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا ۚ وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌۢ٢٠
Surely your Lord knows that you ˹O Prophet˺ stand ˹in prayer˺ for nearly two-thirds of the night, or ˹sometimes˺ half of it, or a third, as do some of those with you. Allah ˹alone˺ keeps a ˹precise˺ measure of the day and night. He knows that you ˹believers˺ are unable to endure this, and has turned to you in mercy. So recite ˹in prayer˺ whatever you can from the Quran. He knows that some of you will be sick, some will be travelling throughout the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and some fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite whatever you can from it. And ˹continue to˺ perform ˹regular˺ prayers, pay alms-tax, and lend to Allah a good loan. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah far better and more rewarding. And seek Allah’s forgiveness. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
