بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
88:1
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ١
English
Has the news of the Overwhelming Event reached you ˹O Prophet˺?
Understand this verse
88:2
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ٢
English
On that Day ˹some˺ faces will be downcast

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ٣
English
˹totally˺ overburdened, exhausted

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً٤
English
burning in a scorching Fire

88:5
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ٥
English
left to drink from a scalding spring.

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ٦
English
They will have no food except a foul, thorny shrub

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ٧
English
neither nourishing nor satisfying hunger.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ٨
English
On that Day ˹other˺ faces will be glowing with bliss

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ٩
English
˹fully˺ pleased with their striving

فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ١٠
English
in an elevated Garden

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً١١
English
where no idle talk will be heard.

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ١٢
English
In it will be a running spring

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ١٣

along with thrones raised high

وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ١٤
English
and cups set at hand

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ١٥
English
and ˹fine˺ cushions lined up

وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ١٦
English
and ˹splendid˺ carpets spread out.

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ١٧
English
Do they not ever reflect on camels—how they were ˹masterfully˺ created;

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ١٨
English
and the sky—how it was raised ˹high˺;

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ١٩
English
and the mountains—how they were firmly set up;

وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ٢٠

and the earth—how it was levelled out?
